DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE - 2

RabbitHole.jpg

Yet again, an old commencement speech delivers a powerful message. This one was delivered by Admiral William H. McRaven, Commander of U.S. Special Operations Command. In his speech, McRaven shares the lessons he learned while becoming a Navy SEAL.

This video is 20 minutes long. I know, that's soooooo long! Make it happen! Find the time! You need to hear this!

Before we get to the details of May 31st and the workout, I think it's very important to understand the WHY behind this workout and event.  Maybe more important than the WHY, is the WHO.  Many of you have heard of the workout, "Murph", but it's now become such a household name that (IMO) people have almost become disconnected from what this is all about.  It so much more than running and a lot of reps.

If you haven't taken the time to look into the background of Lt. Michael Murphy, you need to.  It won't be difficult....all it takes is a quick Google search and you'll discover an extremely powerful story of service, brotherhood, selflessness and bravery.

I'm not going to attempt to re-tell or re-write the story that others have told better than I ever could.  Rather, I will share this little glimpse into the details of what happened during Operation Red Wings that would ultimately bring "Murph" to the forefront.

"...Despite the intensity of the firefight and suffering grave gunshot wounds himself, Murphy is credited with risking his own life to save the lives of his teammates. Murphy, intent on making contact with headquarters, but realizing this would be impossible in the extreme terrain where they were fighting, unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own life moved into the open, where he could gain a better position to transmit a call to get help for his men.

Moving away from the protective mountain rocks, he knowingly exposed himself to increased enemy gunfire.  This deliberate and heroic act deprived him of cover and made him a target for the enemy.  While continuing to be fired upon, Murphy made contact with the SOF Quick Reaction Force at Bagram Air Base and requested assistance. He calmly provided his unit’s location and the size of the enemy force while requesting immediate support for his team. At one point he was shot in the back causing him to drop the transmitter. Murphy picked it back up, completed the call and continued firing at the enemy who was closing in.  Severely wounded, Lt. Murphy returned to his cover position with his men and continued the battle..."

Again, this is a very, very brief description of Murhpy's actions, and I hope that you make the time to look a little deeper.  In fact, if you are hooked....I can say with 100% honesty that the book, "Lone Survivor" will provide a story that will change your life.

In fact, the Lone Survivor Foundation was created by Murphy's TEAMmate, Former SEAL and author of Lone Survivor, Marcus Luttrell.  The LSF will be receiving 100% of the proceeds that we raise on May 31st.  This is just one more reason to come out and participate in workout and contribute to something that is so much larger.
